Sanford Resignation Watch Raising Level to 'High'
Last week, my piece gathering reaction to the revelations around Mark Sanford quoted consultants who concluded that a resignation was inevitable, as well as a former staffer who thought his old boss could survive the controversy.
After the death of Michael Jackson suddenly dominated the news, there were nervous jokes that the affair would quickly become yesterday's news, and the public disappointment/fury/ disbelief would dissipate.
Maybe not. In his interview with the Associated Press, Sanford called his mistress his "soul mate," but said that he'll try to fall back in love with his wife.
Also, Jenny Sanford told the AP in an interview Friday that her husband had repeatedly sought permission to visit Chapur, and she refused. "I said absolutely not. It's one thing to forgive adultery; it's another thing to condone it," she said.
These additional details will not help persuade the state — or The State, for that matter — that this is a matter best left to the parties involved.
If Mark Sanford really wants to remain governor, he's not acting like it.
UPDATE: From one of my South Carolina guys: "It's very bizarre. And I'm speechless when I think about the additional humiliation he is heaping upon his wife with every new outburst. The worst part is I don't think he's done talking even now."
Somewhere, Rod Blagojevich is saying, "See, I'm not that bad."
