HORSERACE

'Remember Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky'

One of my regulars notes yesterday's post about Adler and remembers a particular congresswoman from Pennsylvania who represents the dramatic consequences of casting the wrong vote:

Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky of Pennsylvania was the final vote for President Clinton's tax increases. Also remember the scores of Congressmen and Senators who were defeated because of their support for the Brady Bill and, more particularly, the Assault Weapons Ban. It may seem like ancient history, but the point of your post is a good one.

The Democrats (like in 93-94 with taxes and gun control) are going for broke. The difference is that the 93-94 taxes and gun provisions were all eventually (or effectively) reversed whereas nationalized healthcare never will be. Just ask the Tories in England about that one!

The New York Times recalls:

As Ms. Margolies-Mezvinsky marched down the aisle toward her fateful moment, House Republicans sang, "Bye-bye, Margie." A year later, their prediction came true. Winning 49 percent of the district vote to Ms. Margolies-Mezvinsky's 45 percent, Mr. Fox joined 72 other Republican freshmen to end 40 years of Democratic rule in the House.

If I'm the Democrats, I make sure the chronologically 218th vote is cast by someone from the safest of districts, like Nancy Pelosi or Maxine Waters.
