BARACK OBAMA, JOHN MCCAIN, HORSERACE

What's Obama's June Fundraising Total?

How much money did Barack Obama raise in June?

John McCain came in a bit more than $22 million for June — $1 million more than May, when they were only $1 million or so behind Obama. They're pretty pleased for a traditionally relatively slow midsummer month, and they're taking public financing anyway.

And all year long, the RNC has been raking it in compared to the DNC. (Democratic donors trust Barack, but not Howard?)

Back on June 9, Obama supporters were talking $100 million for the month.

Let me offer a bit of speculation. If Obama had raised $100 million in June, we would have heard about it by now. If he had raised anywhere near that king’s ransom, we would have heard about it by now. In fact, you have to think that if his number was say, $44 million, doubling McCain’s collection for the month, we would have heard that, too.

Sean Oxendine notes that Obama always released his record-breaking numbers as quickly as possible; his less impressive months, the numbers were released around the 20th or so. Today is the 14th.

Patrick Ruffini notes that John Kerry collected $30 million in June 2004.

Is it possible that Obama's decision to forsake public financing was a mistake? Between the Denver convention running low on funds, Hillary's demands for help in retiring her debt, the RNC outraising the DNC five to one, and a steady decline in Obama's donations month-to-month (a tough economy hitting Obama's small donors? The buzz and hype have passed?), is Obama the candidate with the campaign that has to watch its pennies?
