BARACK OBAMA

Back and Forth on Obama's Alleged Assurance to Canada's Ambassador

The Canadian television station that reported that Obama's campaign had assured the Canadian ambassdor that their anti-NAFTA rhetoric wasn't serious stands by its story in the face of denials from Team Obama and the Canadian Embassy.

Obama's in a tough spot here. If the meeting or calls never happened, the Obama folks have to somehow prove a negative. A denial doesn't do much to defuse this, because if you believe that Obama would lie about his position on NAFTA, then you will probably find it plausible that his people would lie about an ambassador's call. And if the conversation did happen, then neither Obama's team nor the embassy would want to admit it.
