JOHN MCCAIN
Thinking Over Mccain's Veep Possibilities, and a Name To Mark Down
Dan McLaughlin offers a really detailed look at McCain's possible vice presidential choices, offering 15 "don't" rules and four "do" rules.
He knocks off a few of my favorite choices along the way: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ("No rookies") and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin ("No new mothers," pointing out how much she has going on on the home front right now). He contends former Ohio congressman Rob Portman's tenure as Bush's Trade Representative and then Budget Director might run afoul of the "no Bushies" rule.
(Quin Hillyer will not be happy at the suggestion that former Congressman Chris Cox has become a scapegoat for market troubles at the SEC.)
Who's left? South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty... and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Allow me to offer a dark horse candidate way below the radar: Rhode Island Governor Don Carcieri. Two term governor, pro-life Catholic, tough on illegal immigration and corruption in his home state. Good biography, as a former high school teacher, former director of Catholic Relief Services in Jamaica in the early 80s, and CEO of Cookson America, a manufacturing company.
