HORSERACE
Tucson Tea Party Defeats Incumbent Democrat on City Council
Next time someone tells you the Tea Partiers are an irrelevant fringe, remind them that the Tucscon branch of the Tea Partiers just mobilized to defeat a Democratic member of the city council, the first time in anyone's memory that an incumbent Democrat has been defeated; registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 2-to-1. The term "black swan" is being thrown around for its rarity.
UPDATE: A local Republican begs to differ:
Although the Tea Party did support the candidates, it was the Pima County GOP that recruited the candidates before the first tea party.
It was the county and state parties that did the door to door and phone calls.
And, it was usually GOP precinct committeemen and women that did the grassroots stuff.
In fact, while the tea party was doing a big event at a baseball stadium on Oct. 10, the PCs were out doing the door to door stuff.
It was a great victory, but don't trash the hard working Republicans who did the grunt work.
Actually, you should give a big shout out to Bob Westerman, the Pima County GOP Chairman, who pulled off this coup.
My aim is not to trash anybody; and anybody who did grunt work deserves thanks and credit.
