BARACK OBAMA

Robert Gibbs, Master of Nuance

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs had, according to some correspondents, his toughest day so far before the press corps.

Asked about recent statements from the president that sounded a lot like much-derided autumn comments by his Republican opponent, Gibbs explained that Obama had made the rational and easily justified assessment that the fundamentals of the economy are "sound"; while back in the fall, when the DJIA was much higher and the unemployment rate was lower, John McCain offered the unhinged conclusion that the fundamentals were "strong."

Ah, that clears it up.
