BARACK OBAMA

Reasons for Good Cheer on a Monday

It's a wonderful Monday.

No, really.

Harry Reid and the Democrats are conceding they won't be able to pass a stimulus bill right after January 20. More time means more opportunity for scrutiny, and more opportunity for scrutiny will allow those of us outside the process see who's trying to sneak in stuff like, oh, federal aid for whitewater rafting programs on Maine rivers. Vice-President-elect Biden made a big show of how the bill would not be a Christmas tree. We'll soon get to see if they're serious about that, or whether all statements from Barack Obama and Joe Biden come with an expiration . . . well, you know how that goes.

Reid, who once said the Senate would never seat anyone appointed by Blagojevich, is now saying, "anything can happen." Another bold and adamant pledge, looking shaky.

My governor, Democrat Tim Kaine, has taken a part-time job running the DNC. Some of us thought running a state was a full-time job, but maybe Blagojevich made the case that a governorship just isn't lucrative enough.

Speaking of party chairs, later today, the candidates for RNC Chair debate at the National Press Club. I'll be on-scene, and giving updates either immediately or as soon as I can get a wireless signal . . .
