MITT ROMNEY

Mitt's New Ad on Immigration

Romney has a new ad out, airing in Iowa:

Romney for President, Inc.
“Secure”:30 TV

Mitt Romney (VO): We should secure our border.

We should put in place an employment verification system.

And then when an employer is thinking of hiring someone the federal database immediately tells them whether they’re available to be working or not.

If they’re not you can’t hire them.

People that are here illegally are going to have to get in line with everybody else with no special pathway to becoming citizens

Legal immigration is great, but illegal immigration that we’ve got to end.

Thank you, and Amnesty is not the way to do it.

Mitt Romney (VO): I’m Mitt Romney and I approved this message.

A couple of thoughts. First, I notice Mitt is appearing in the ad again, after just using his voice in the "Oceans" ad. I'm finding the timing curious - not wrong, just curious - wouldn't this ad have been more effective during the whole immigration deal debate? Doesn't this seem a little after-the-fact? Finally, I could be wrong, but I think they're using the same font as the opening credits to "24" when the words "secure borders" "employment verification for immigrants" and "enforce the law" appear on the screen, along with very dramatic, ominous music.

Also, I notice the tagline is, "Strong. New. Leadership." Say what you will about the punctuation, that's the message to use when "Thirtysomething" is considered a high approval rating in Washington.

UPDATE: Team Romney writes in, "We did air an earlier immigration ad in Iowa and New Hampshire during the middle of the immigration debate. And in Iowa particularly, immigration is a huge issue then, now and tomorrow."
