HORSERACE
Lisa Madigan, Not Interested in Running for Higher Office in 2010
With the news about Ensign, Sanford and Palin, it's understandable that Republicans feel like they never catch a break.
But fate smiles upon potential Senate candidate Rep. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.), as Attorney General Lisa Madigan — you remember her as the Demi Moore lookalike from the Rod Blagojevich mess — has decided not to run for either the U.S. Senate or governor, much to the surprise of Illinois politics watchers.
Conservatives are irked with Kirk right now for his vote in support of the cap-and-trade bill, but they'll probably prefer Kirk to current seat-holder Roland Burris, and appreciate the potential irony of a Republican winning what was once Obama's Senate seat. A May poll showed Kirk clinging to a 34-point lead over Burris, and he has a campaign war-chest of more than $1 million.

Declining to run for governor or the U.S. Senate, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has apparently decided to let sleeping dogs lie.
UPDATE: Among the Republicans running for Illinois governor is Dan Proft, who NRO reader Doug, a friend of the candidate, describes as, "the candidate most likely to choke some people."
