HORSERACE
Latest Exits Include One Massive 'Wow.' I Mean, 'WOW.'
Here’s a later round of exits. It includes an absolute shocker that, I suspect, will have Hugh Hewitt jumping out of his chair…
Arizona: McCain 36 percent, Romney 36 percent, Huckabee 7 percent. I think there are a lot of tough-on-immigration folks and a lot of Mormons coming together tonight to oppose McCain in his home state. I wouldn’t bet a great deal on it holding, but it’s a pretty eye-opening result.
The rest, ranked by my sense of order of importance:
California: McCain 40 percent, Romney 35 percent, Huckabee 12 percent.
Missouri: McCain 33 percent, Romney 30 percent, Huckabee 27 percent.
Leading it in the last one was some of the best news for Romney; this is bad news, if it holds.
Georgia: Huckabee 32 percent, Romney 31 percent, McCain 30 percent.
We won't be getting a winner in this one for a while.
Tennessee: Huckabee 33 percent, McCain 30, Romney 27 percent.
The South just won't warm up to Romney, will it?*
Illinois: McCain 46, Romney 30, Huckabee 16.
New York, New Jersey – they’re McCain by a lot. Massachusetts, it’s Romney.
No word on whether McCain or Romney have chipped away at Romney's 85 percent lead in Utah.
UPDATE: I'm hearing some folks insisting that Romney is only down one in the exit polls in California.
ANOTHER UPDATE: One of my Romney guys asks, "Couldn’t that line have been written “the south just won’t warm up to the national front runner with the connection to the military” or “the south just won’t warm up to the son of the south”?"
