FRED THOMPSON
St. Paul, Fed Up With The Sarah-Bashing
It's been a cloudy day here in St. Paul, and the mood seems to match the weather - although it's not gloom so much as it's a stirring, brewing anger. Some of this is because there are no Monday speeches to discuss and dissect. Some of this is because Obama's convention bump became clear today, and it's substantial. But that's not the talk of the delegates, right-leaning media folk, the folks on talk radio row. No, the topic of talk is a mix of supreme incredulousness and fury at the treatment of Gov. Sarah Palin.
Robert Wexler's screaming that she supports Nazi sympathizers because she welcomed then-presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, even though she has an Israeli flag in her window. We're supposed to be worried about her part-ownership of a car wash, we're supposed to be horrified by the way they're handing their daughter's pregnancy, we're supposed to wonder if her experience on a city council and as a mayor is relevant to the presidency. Apparently we're to be concerned about Todd Palin's involvement in the Alaska Independence Party. (Sarah's never been a member, despite what the New York Times writes.) We're supposed to be okay with her being labeled a "bimbo" by Ed Schultz. We're supposed to nod approvingly when Maureen Dowd calls her the "Vice in Go-Go Boots."
Palin and McCain may be emulating Obama with open-air talks tomorrow and Thursday, because when Fred Thompson rips the media and defends Palin tonight, the roof of the XCel Energy Center may very well come off.
