MIKE HUCKABEE, MITT ROMNEY, JOHN MCCAIN, FRED THOMPSON
Mitt and Mike Go At It
McCain touts his pork-busting credentials. He looks tanner than he did last night. Is that my television, a difference in makeup, a difference in color tint between ABC and Fox, or was he in the sun a lot today.
Huckabee touts that he signed the first broad-based tax cut in his state's history into law.
"It's not about the politics of saying, 'I never raised a tax,' it's about making government work." Hmm.
Mitt and Mike tussle on fee hikes and tax hikes. "You know, Mike, you make up facts faster than you talk."
"We had a court order to improve our state's education system. Maybe they don't have to obey the courts up in Massachusetts, but we do in Arkansas."
Rudy touts that he had higher revenues after he lowered taxes in New York City.
Rudy mentions the George Will column, for seemingly the millionth time, except he says that Will wrote that Giuliani had run "the most conservative government in fifty years." I'm pretty sure Will wrote that Giuliani was "the most successful example of conservative governance in fifty years." It's still worth bragging about, but there's a difference.
On Social Security reform, Thompson sounds like a grown-up.
I like Chris Wallace, but he's a bit more combative than Charlie Gibson was last night, and I think Saturday night demonstrated that when it comes to moderators, less is more.
Wallace: What do you do when the Democrats vote against that plan?
Thompson: You fight 'em! You take your case to the American people.
McCain touts Reagan and Tip O'Neill working together in 1983 to save Social Security.
Jim's take: Senator, I have some doubts as to whether Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can be as reasonable and compromising as Tip O'Neill.
