MITT ROMNEY, JOHN MCCAIN

Conservative Activist Seeking Anti-McCain Coalition

I am told that a prominent and longtime conservative activist was calling conservative interest groups yesterday trying to see how to stop McCain. At least one conservative has responded to this call by suggesting that the righties give Romney until Tuesday and if he doesn't pull off some serious wins, to try to end this and cut a deal with McCain while the conservatives still have some influence. The one who offered that advice isn't expecting it to be followed.
One of the problems being encountered by the Stop-McCain Activist is that certain conservative interest groups don't see Romney as significantly better than McCain on their signature issues... My source asked that I not specify those issues, but you can probably figure them out.
