MIKE HUCKABEE

Will He Hold a Tough Line on Castro Because of the Cigars?

In the interest of fairness, I'll point out that a "K Street mole for Huckabee" makes the case that a nationwide ban on smoking in public places is a consistent pro-life position.

I still think an issue like public smoking isn't something for the president to weigh in on. Maybe, if we were in an era of peace and prosperity, and there was less on the next president's plate (I know, I know, by using the plate metaphor I'm inviting a Huckabee lecture on the importance of healthy eating) I wouldn't be so irked. But we're got a war on terror going on, the housing slump is going to hit the economy, few feel like our schools are preparing our young people to work in an era of globalization, the borders are open, there's still a long road ahead in Iraq, Iran's progressing toward nuclear weapons, entitlements are a ticking time-bomb, we've got a ton of imported goods from China that are toxic, we've got serious worries about our long-term supply of energy, U.S. automakers are in trouble, there's genocide in the Sudan, South Korea just agreed to pull its troops out of Afghanistan to meet the Taliban's demands, and Paul Krugman has been freed from the prison of TimesSelect. Maybe I travel in circles full of non-smoking sections, but a War on Second-Hand Smoke is way, way down my list of priorities for the next president...

Of course, I guess he's not as bad as John Edwards, calling for mandatory preventative care.
