MITT ROMNEY

Ron Paul, Mitt, and the Ames Straw Poll

Patrick Ruffini makes a striking prediction about Ron Paul and the Ames Straw poll.

I would note that Ruffini made a somewhat similar shocking prediction about Ron Paul's fundraising, and Paul fell well short of the prediction.

I wonder if a guy at three percent or so in the polls coming in second in a straw poll will finally kill off the idea of straw polls entirely...

And if Rudy Giuliani scored some points by teeing up Ron Paul in one of the debates, I wonder if Mitt Romney would be well served to take a shot at one or two of Paul's positions, reminding his supporters about what they've signed on for... like opposing giving congressional gold medals to Pope John Paul II, Ronald Reagan and Rosa Parks on financial grounds.

UPDATE: Reader Mark points out that Paul did offer to pay for the gold medals out of his own pocket, and challenged other members of Congress to do the same. That act mitigates his stance on the merits a bit, but it's worth noting that if Paul ever won the GOP nomination (stop laughing, just for a second) those "no" votes would be the kind of move that can launch a thousand unfair attack ads.
