BARACK OBAMA

It Would Make Sense for Obama to Announce His Running Mate Tomorrow.

I won't be up to all hours — parenthood makes all-nighters more frequent and involuntary — but I wouldn't be surprised if we awoke tomorrow morning to hear word of Obama's running mate. The media is saying by Thursday; the Democratic Convention starts a week from tomorrow. There will probably be a tropical storm making landfall in Florida on Tuesday; starting that day, the cable networks and nightly news will feature water-logged correspondents giving live updates on the wind speed. The running mate selection could easily be the second-biggest story of the day; third or fourth, depending on what happens in Georgia or at the Olympics.

Last year I was tipped that Kerry-Edwards was being painted on Kerry's plane at 2 a.m. before the announcement. Judging by this AP photo from earlier today, the plane has not been repainted, and maybe it won't be before the running mate is named.

On a lark, I tried out the URLs for the most likely Democratic tickets we've heard.

ObamaBayh.com leads to... some privately owned site with a news feed on the two men.

ObamaKaine.com is reserved through GoDaddy.com, as is ObamaBiden.com and ObamaSebelius.com.

ObamaClinton.com goes to a page on CafePress.com, where the product is not found. Someone else who has ObamaHillary.com is using that site to promote a petition to urge Obama to pick the former first lady.

Whoever owns the domain name ObamaNunn.com is accepting inquiries at an e-mail address at that site.

Presuming that the Obama campaign would want to secure the web address for their ticket before the announcement — lest some opponent buy the URL and put up an attack site at that address — the most likely choices seem to be Kaine, Biden, or Sebelius.
