BARACK OBAMA
"I know that ultimately the measure of an economy is, Is it producing jobs?
The news of pretty good (3.5 percent) GDP growth in the last quarter is welcome, although we ought to remember that a chunk of that growth comes from the one-time burst of cash-for-clunkers; economists are crediting it for 1.6 percent.
I'll still be surprised if the unemployment news next Friday isn't pretty grim. And House Republicans helpfully remind us of this September 20 statement from President Obama: "This is something that I ask every single one of my economic advisers every single day, because I know that ultimately the measure of an economy is, 'Is it producing jobs?'"
