HORSERACE

What Does It Mean When Even Democrats Are Running Against Washington?

In Pennsylvania, another Democrat announced he's running for the seat of Rep. Joe Sestak, who's challenging Sen. Arlen Specter (D., Today). But take a look at why he's running; it's not quite an advertisement for Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the current Democratic majority:

Acknowledging voter frustration with the highest levels of federal government, state Rep. Bryan Lentz, D-161, of Swarthmore, said he would "stand up against powerful interests and stand on the side of regular people" in announcing his candidacy for the 2010 7th Congressional District race.

“If you elect me to Congress, I will show you once again that I understand what it means to put service over self and I know what it means to fight for the people I represent,” Lentz told the 130 or so supporters packed into American Legion Post 214 Thursday morning for the announcement. “I won’t work for any political party and I won’t work for any political party boss.”

Lentz said he understands people are legitimately angry with a federal government “that can bail out huge banks and corporations but struggles to keep people in their homes” and “spends too much on too many things while hardworking families are forced to tighten their belts.”

“I will take the message to Washington to argue less and work more, to politic less and govern more, and to do what is necessary to improve the lives of the people that we represent in Washington,” he said. “I’ve been an Airborne Ranger, I’ve been a prosecutor, and I’ve been a legislator, and I am prepared to be a congressman.”

Most of those statements wouldn't sound out of place at a Tea Party rally, would they?

He's likely to go up against former U.S. attorney Pat Meehan.
